Hemingway Tours and Safaris are pleased to announce that a percentage of each Hemingway Travel Collection purchase will be donated to the "Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International." For those of you who do not recognize her name, Dian was a noted humanitarian and conservationist who was murdered by poachers because of her efforts to protect the m ountain g orillas. ("Please refer to the excellent movie "Gorillas in the Mist!")
After the recent July 2007 killings of these endangered mountain gorillas, possibly by people involved in the illegal charcoal trade ( it is a common belief in the area that rubbing a new born baby in the ashy remains of a gorilla will protect it from evil and guarantee good health), a mobile anti-poaching force stayed close to the gorillas in Virunga National Park.
But the Democratic Republic of the Congo 's parks authority, ICCN, must keep the animals safe when these guards are needed elsewhere. Nairobi-based Wildlife Direct - founded by anthropologist Richard Leaky - helps outfit rangers and supplement their government salaries. The group's web site (wildlifedirect.org)hosts blogs where rangers and others post news and pictures from the field but much more is needed so we have selected the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International as our recipient.
"Seek out the true and authentic. Be open to surprise and serendipity. And appreciate each rout e s sense of place and uniqueness. And, most of all, we must be careful not to ruin what we love most." - National Geographic
